Treasures and Soul Food
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
How does someone handle disappointment? How does someone forgive without receiving an apology and one is likely never to come? As I reflect on these questions, I see a correlation between building up treasures and moving forward from disappointment. When we build up treasures on earth, we begin placing too much trust in systems and people. Since we live in a world affected by chaos and sin, systems and people will disappoint and possibly hurt us. Fortunately for us, we have a God who is for us and cares for me way more than systems and people ever could. Because of this truth--when we build up treasures in heaven--we place trust in the One who is trustworthy and never fails. When we build up treasures in heaven, our identity and value come from the One gave up his life and shed his blood to save us and adopt us into His family. Becuase of this action, we were forgiven for the ways we have wronged and shamed God. This is how we move forward from disappointment and forgive those who have hurt us. This is how we turn the other cheek and continue to pursue shalom and God's heart. I am thankful for friends in my life who remind me of this truth, who remind me to seek joy and to seek the good things that are happening right now. I am grateful for friends who encourage me through their words and actions to remember how God has taught and is teaching my feet to dance upon disappointment. Deep friendships are soul food for this introvert.
Speaking of soul food, I went on another food adventure today! I had the opportunity to meet up with a friend and try out Doll's Kitchen, which I have been wanting to eat at for months now. The restaurant is small but cozy. Our waitress was really friendly and attentive. Since I was at a soul food restaurant, I obviously had to try their fried chicken (which may or may not by my kryptonite). For my sides, I got the mac and cheese and candied yams. Everything was DELICIOUS, or as Guy Fieri would say WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER. The chicken was crispy on the outside and nice and juicy on the inside. The batter and meat were flavored well, which this fried chicken enthusiast appreciates! The only thing is that, for the price, I wish they served a half chicken as opposed to three wings.
OMG. The mac and cheese. I can't even guys. It was cheesy. It was creamy. The spices were on point (my palate is not sophisticated enough to tell you what I tasted haha). I also had a corner piece, so my piece had developed a cheese crust.
The candied yams melted in my mouth like butter. Since they are candied, they are SWEET. If you can't take the sugar, I recommend another side.
Overall, another pleasant food adventure. I recommend y'all in town to make the drive to McKinley and Chestnut and check this place out. Thanks again for reading and, until next, happy food adventures!
